Introduction to WTB’s Revised Tough Casing Tires
WTB has upgraded their enduro tire lineup by making them stronger and more grippy. The revised tires include some of their most aggressive tread patterns: the Judge, Trail Boss, Verdict, and Vigilante. These new improvements ensure better performance on rugged terrains and in tough weather conditions.
By introducing the new SG1 casing technology, WTB adds extra support to the tires, providing better puncture protection and longevity. The rebalanced Tri-Tec rubber compound enhances grip, especially in wet conditions. Additionally, the new tires come in 29” or 27.5” diameters, except for the Vigilante, which is available only in 29”.
With these upgrades, WTB continues to offer high-performance enduro tires at a competitive price of ZAR 1,619.10, which is more affordable than many gravity tire options on the market.
Key Features of WTB’s SG1 Tough Casing Tires
SG1 Casing Technology
WTB’s new SG1 technology focuses on increasing durability and protection. The 60 TPI tubeless-ready casing now comes with added layering under the tread and a taller Apex shield around the bead, increasing it from 5mm to 15mm.
These added features significantly improve the tire’s resistance to damage, but they also lead to an increase in weight. For example, the Vigilante 29” gained an additional 383g, while the Judge 27.5” saw an increase of 210g.
Tri-Tec Rubber Compound
The Tri-Tec rubber compound has also been revamped. WTB’s updated compound features a combination of three different rubbers. The softest rubber is on the side knobs, the center knobs are slightly harder, and a firmer base supports both layers.
This rebalanced rubber formula improves performance in wet conditions and extends the tire’s longevity. WTB adjusted the natural versus synthetic rubber ratio to provide better grip and more durability.
Setup and Installation
Installation of the new WTB tires was simple, with no issues seating the tires on various rim types. Using a standard pump, the tires sealed easily and didn’t leak any sealant through the sidewalls.
These tires were tested under the weight of an e-bike and a regular enduro bike. With tire pressures ranging from 21 to 27 psi depending on the model and setup, we conducted side-by-side tests of the old and new tire versions. The results showed clear improvements in grip and durability.

Verdict Tire Performance
The open tread design of the Verdict tire is perfect for loose and muddy conditions. Its square knobs shed mud easily and offer excellent traction in soft terrain. However, the tread pattern may make it less suitable for hardpack surfaces, where braking performance can feel less consistent. The Verdict works best as a front tire when paired with the Judge on the rear.
Judge Tire Performance
The Judge tire shines as a rear-specific tire with fantastic braking performance. Its alternating square and rectangular tread blocks grip all surfaces well, whether you’re riding upright or leaning into turns. Its robust side knobs and supportive design make it a reliable choice for demanding trails.
Vigilante Tire Performance
The Vigilante is a versatile all-rounder, performing well across mixed terrain. While it may not grip as well as the Verdict in deep mud, it’s more consistent on hardpack surfaces. This balance makes it a great choice for riders who tackle various terrains, providing predictability and control in different conditions.
Support, Grip, and Durability
WTB’s new SG1 casing and Tri-Tec compound represent a major leap forward in tire technology. The extra weight of these tires is noticeable, especially on climbs, but their increased durability and performance in rough and wet conditions more than compensate for the added heft.
The SG1 casing delivers ample support, while the Tri-Tec compound provides better grip on wet rocks and roots. Despite extensive testing on e-bikes and enduro bikes, these tires remained puncture-free and offered exceptional grip and reliability.

WTB’s revised Tough casing tires are a solid choice for gravity riders who need durability and high performance. Although heavier than previous models, their robustness, grip in wet conditions, and overall reliability make them an excellent value for the price.
